AAPPL

What is AAPPL?

ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language (AAPPL) is taken by students in Language Immersion programs in grades 3- 9.

The AAPPL is a proficiency- and performance-based assessment that evaluates language performance and proficiency across all three communication modes: Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational. It consists of four components:

  1. Interpersonal Listening & Speaking (ILS): This assesses your ability to understand spoken language and engage in spoken communication with others.

  2. Interpretive Listening (IL): This evaluates your comprehension of spoken language, such as listening to audio recordings or conversations.

  3. Interpretive Reading (IR): This measures your understanding of written texts, including articles, passages, or other written materials.

  4. Presentational Writing (PW): This focuses on your ability to produce written content, such as essays, reports, or summaries.

Scoring

AAPPL scores range from N-1 (the low end of the Novice range) through A-1 (the beginning of the Advanced range). Here’s how these scores align with the ACTFL Proficiency Scale:

  • Novice Range (N-1 to N-3):

    • N-1: Basic communication with memorized phrases and limited vocabulary.

    • N-2: Can handle simple, routine tasks with some support.

    • N-3: Can communicate about familiar topics with more fluency.

  • Intermediate-Range (I-1 to I-3):

    • I-1: Can handle a wider range of topics and express opinions.

    • I-2: Can participate in conversations and discussions.

    • I-3: Can narrate and describe events in more detail.

  • Advanced Range (A-1):

    • A-1: Beginning of the Advanced range. Can discuss complex topics, express ideas clearly, and write well-organized essays.

For learners whose performance exceeds the criteria for A-1, an ACTFL Proficiency test (such as the Oral Proficiency Interview or Writing Proficiency Test) is recommended. The AAPPL Score Report provides detailed information about your proficiency range and performance score for each component, along with recommendations for improvement.

Results

A single AAPPL Score, according to the ACTFL Performance Scale, is issued for each component of the test (Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening). Students receive a brief narrative explaining each score and recommendations for improvement.
